Pipeline Safety

Call Before You Dig

More than 2.6 million miles of pipelines crisscross our country. Buried underground, pipelines are the safest and most efficient way to move natural gas, crude oil, chemicals and other useful products. Damage from excavation-related activities is a leading cause of pipeline incidents. You can help maintain the integrity of the pipeline systems near you by using the nationwide Call Before You Dig service, available by calling 811.

If you are considering a project like building a pool, installing a fence, widening a driveway or planting trees, always call 811 before you dig. Let the 811 Center know where and when you plan to excavate and then do not begin work until a trained technician has come to mark the location of any pipelines in your area. This usually takes between 48 and 72 hours and is at no cost to you.
